11 - Insertions: links and exclusions

Insertion links

Insertion links allow you to link multiple insertions together: they will always appear together on the page.

Insertion links only work properly when using One Call. With Standard tagging, the integrity of the linked insertions cannot be guaranteed!

Insertion links are also referred to as roablocks.

A page with linked insertions

This example shows a page with 3 formats. There are 3 linked insertions (blue) on this page.

Page with linked insertions

Rule 1: All or nothing

All or nothing

When the page loads, either all linked insertions (blue) will be displayed or no linked insertions (red, green, yellow).

Rule 1 only applies when using One Call. When using Standard tagging, you may get only some of the linked insertions (e. g. the skyscraper and the medium rectangle).

Rule 2: No combinations

Combinations not allowed

It is not possible to display only some of the linked insertions (blue) without all the others.

Rule 2 only applies when using One Call. When using Standard tagging, you may get only some of the linked insertions (e. g. the skyscraper and the medium rectangle).

Define link

Define link
  • go to the Campaign level (1)
  • check the insertions you wish to link (2)
  • click Define a link (3)

Select link

Select link
  • select Exclusive link (1) if appropriate - for more, read below
  • select an existing link (2) or
  • create a new link (3)
  • click Manage links (4) to switch to a list of all link categories and all online insertions which are connected with the given link
  • click Save

Exclusive links

With exclusive links (sometimes called roadblocks), you can sell one or multiple formats on the page exclusively to an advertiser. The other formats (which are not part of the exclusive link) will remain empty. An exclusive links also works for a single insertion: the single insertion is displayed and all the other formats remain empty.

Exclusive links work with OneCall only. A OneCall requests all the formats of a given page in a single ad call, rather than in multiple calls. You cannot use this feature if your insertion(s) is/are called with the Standard call type!

Put insertions online

Put insertions online

The insertions are displayed with a link icon. Click Put online so that the link comes into effect.

Rules

  • linked insertions must be defined on different formats; if they were on the same format, a link would not make sense

  • an insertion can be in only one link
  • on a page, there can be multiple groups of linked insertions
(this only applies for One Call!)

Insertions in a link consist of a master insertion and one or multiple slave insertions. The master insertion is:

  • the insertion with the highest priority - or
  • the insertion with the highest insertion ID (in case there are multiple insertions with the same priority)

For the master insertion, the following rules apply:

  • when the master insertion is stopped, all the linked insertions are stopped
 as well

  • when the master insertion goes OFF, all linked insertions are set to OFF
 as well
  • when the master insertion goes ON, all linked insertions are set to ON
 as well

All linked insertions must:

  • have the same volume (or no volume at all)

  • have the same scheduling (start date, end date, custom schedules...)

  • have the same targeting criteria
  • have the same placements (websites/pages/packs), except the format

  • deliver on pages with appropriate tagging: the format of the linked insertion must really be present on the website; the website's tagging must match with the formats selected in the page groups)
  • have the same capping criteria

When calling a format multiple times (multi-instance format), you must render all formats on the page. Else, the insertion link feature will not work.

Example
If a format (35678) has instance = 3, you must call
-  sas.render("35678")
-  sas.render("35678_2")
-  sas.render("35678_3")

The following table describes some conditions and the resulting behavior:

Condition Result
Linked insertions have differing capping criteria Link will not work if one of the insertion is capped but not the others.
Master and slave insertion(s) have different placements The user interface will remove the page(s) where both formats are not present.
Master and slave have same placements but the formats are not available on the same pages When putting online, the user interface removes the page(s) where the format is not present. However, this is done for the insertions individually, without taking the link into account. Thus, the link will not work correctly.
Master insertion and slave insertion(s) have differing targeting The link will not work correctly.
A slave insertion ends before the master insertion (due to different end date or usual rules on volumes) The other insertions keep running. This is equivalent to removing one insertion from the link.
The master insertion stops before the slave insertion(s) (due to different end date or usual rules on volumes) The slave insertions are stopped automatically when the master insertion stops.
Master insertion and slave insertion(s) have different scheduling (custom schedules) The slave insertion's scheduling is ignored. The master insertion rules delivery.

Discrepancies

Discrepancies

With linked insertions, you may see impression discrepancies, which are usually less than 5%. This is a known issue, but only occurs with non-one-call tagging. Linked insertions work without any discrepancies with one-call tagging (read here for more)

Insertion exclusions

With insertion exclusions, you make sure that insertions are never displayed together on the same page.

Define insertion exclusion

Define insertion exclusion
  • go to the Campaign level (1)
  • check the insertions you wish to exclude (2)
  • click Define an exclusion (3)

Select exclusion category

Select exclusion category
  • select an existing exclusion category (1) or
  • create a new exclusion category (2)
  • click Manage exclusions (3) to switch to a list of all exclusion categories and all online insertions which are currently assigned to the exclusion category
  • click Save

Advertiser exclusions

You can assign an advertiser to an advertiser exclusion category. Insertions from this advertiser will never be displayed together on page.

The same is true when you add multiple advertisers to an advertiser exclusion category: insertions from all advertisers (which are added to the exclusion category) will never be displayed together.
