07 - Insertions: Targeting

Overview

Overview

Targeting criteria allow you to restrict delivery of the insertion. They are optional (the insertion can go online without any defined targeting criteria).

The defined targeting criteria are AND-connected. For instance, if you target an insertion to the Platform Desktops and to the Country France, the insertion will only be displayed for users who are using desktop computers AND who are located in France.

The targeting tab summarizes the defined targeting criteria at the top. To define criteria, scroll down an expand the appropriate section.

Available targeting criteria

Platform

Choose from Desktop, Tablet, Smartphone

Only works with the latest ad tag types (generic call, as described here). Legacy ad tags (pubj etc.) are not supported!

Browser

Restricts delivery to specific browsers

ISP

Restricts delivery to certain Internet Service Providers; the list shown here is a short list; get back to your service contact if you miss ISPs; they can be added upon request

Connection type

Restricts delivery to users with the selected connection type: All, Fixed network (Wifi etc.), Mobile network (3G etc.)

Only works with the latest ad tag types (generic call, as described here). Legacy ad tags (pubj etc.) are not supported!

User's interest

With Smart AdServer's user interest targeting module, you can target the insertion to users who showed interest in certain product categories.
Prior to targeting to user's interests, you need to assign product categories to websites and/or pages (in Administration > Sites > Pages). Smart AdServer will track each visit on these websites/pages and build an interest profile with the user's interests.

Keywords/Keyword groups

Restricts delivery to keywords; keywords can be passed with the ad call or read from a cookie; for more details, read here

IP addresses and cookies

Limiting delivery of this insertion to browsers that accept cookies restricts delivery to the users who accept cookies from Smart AdServer. Cookie acceptance is necessary for many features (e. g. exclusions, conversion tracking, unique visitor reporting etc.)

Use the field IP addresses to paste IP addresses or IP address ranges (in format a.b.c.*). Paste only one IP address per line. Maximum: 13 IP adresses/IP address ranges

Use the link Add my IP address to paste your own current IP address. This is useful to test the insertion live on a website (targeting to your own computer only).

Domains

Whitelists or blacklists domains in an uploaded csv file

  • select Blacklist to make sure that the insertion is never displayed on the domains in the csv file  - or
  • select Whitelist to make sure the insertion is only displayed on the domains in the csv file
  • select the csv file (the domains in the file must be separated by comma, semicolon or new line; domains must be in format www.domain.com or subdomain.domain.com)
  • click Upload

Notes

Domain blacklisting is also available on Advertiser level (read here for more details).

On Advertiser level, only blacklisting is supported (no whitelisting).

If the same domain is blacklisted on advertiser level and whitelisted on insertion level, the domain will be considered blacklisted (advertiser level has priority).

On insertion level: You cannot combine blacklisting with whitelisting in an insertion (you must choose from either blacklist or whitelist).

The domains where the ad tags are implemented must match exactly with the domains uploaded in the csv file: there is no wildcard system.

Domain whitelisting/blacklisting requires activation. Get back to your service contact to have it enabled on advertiser and insertion level.

Postal Code and Area code

Restricts delivery to ZIP codes and area phone codes.

ZIP code detection is based on third party technology (Neustar IP intelligence, formerly Quova).

If the end user's IP address is available, the ZIP code is determined (looked up) based on the IP address.

If the GPS data are provided (longitude/latitude), Smart AdServer will first lookup the city and then the ZIP code.

OS

Restricts delivery to specified Operating Systems

Screen

Restricts delivery to specific screen sizes

Quova Geotargeting

Restricts delivery to specified geographical areas (continents, countries, regions, states, cities)

Manufacturer / Model

Restricts delivery to specified mobile device manufacturers and model

Only works with the latest ad tag types (generic call, as described here). Legacy ad tags (pubj etc.) are not supported!
