Live preview of mobile in-app ads

With the live preview of mobile in-app ads, an advertiser/agency can preview a creative directly in the publisher's mobile app (where Smart AdServer's iOS/Android SDK is in use).

It is particularly useful in case of special integrations (e. g. in-feed ads, video-read ads, parallax ads etc.) since it allows the advertiser/agency to see the final rendering of the ad in its actual environment - before the campaign goes online.

The live preview of mobile in-app ads relies on a specific Smart AdServer App available in the iOS and Android app stores.

Overview

The live preview process consists in the following steps:

  • prior to submitting the publisher app, the iOS/Android app developer adds specific code to the app to have it support the live preview feature
  • in the Smart AdServer User interface, the publisher sets up the insertion with the creative to be tested (no need to put the insertion online)
  • the publisher installs Smart AdServer's Dashboard app (iOS) / Preview app (Android) on the device and configures the parameters for the live preview
  • the publisher generates the live preview URL and sends it to the advertiser/agency
  • the advertiser/agency installs the publisher's app on the device and opens the live preview URL received from the publisher
  • the live preview URL opens the publisher's app on the device where the creative will be displayed

Preparing the app (app developer)

As an app developer, you must add specific code to the publisher's app prior to submitting it to the app store:

  • in case of iOS, you must create a new custom URL scheme, as explained here
  • in case of Android, you must add a specific Smart AdServer activity with a specific intent filter in your Android Manifest, as explained here

Setting up the insertion

As a publisher, sing in to the Smart AdServer User Interface and create the insertion with the creative you intend to live preview; you do not need to put the insertion online;

Note down the Insertion ID
Mouse over the page name until the question mark displays; then, note down the SiteID / PageID / FormatID where you intend to live preview the ad

You will need these IDs in the step "Configuring the live preview" (see below).

Installing the Dashboard/Preview app and the publisher app

On the device, install the Dashboard app (iOS) or Preview app (Android)

Also, install the publisher app on the device.

Configuring the Live Preview

The following explanations are based on the iOS Dashboard app. The configuration in the Android Preview app is similar (same features, fields and buttons).

Open the Dashboard app and click Live Preview

This opens the Live Preview Generator

The following table explains the fields and buttons in the Live preview generator

Field/Button Description
Site ID the site ID where the ad will be previewed; this is the site ID you noted down as explained above ("Setting up the insertion")
Page ID the page ID where the ad will be previewed; this is the page ID you noted down as explained above ("Setting up the insertion")
Format ID the format ID where the ad will be previewed; this is the format ID you noted down as explained above ("Setting up the insertion")
Targeting the keyword targeting, in case the previewed insertion has one (optional)
Insertion ID the previewed insertion ID; this is the insertion ID you noted down as explained above ("Setting up the insertion")
Preview duration (in minutes. Max 60): the period until the preview ends (maximum duration: 60 min.); this period starts as soon as you tap "Start Live Preview“;
alternatively, tap "Reset Live Preview" to stop the live preview immediately
Start Live Preview if all the entered IDs are correct and valid, this button will open the publisher app and show the creative from the insertion ID you entered; alternatively, execute the Start Preview URL (see below)
Share Live Preview URL opens the sharing options to share the Start Live Preview URL and Stop Preview URL (for more details see below)
Reset Live Preview stops the live preview immediately; alternatively, execute the Stop Preview URL (see below)

Sharing the Live Preview URL

Tap the Share Live Preview URLs button to open the sharing options. You can copy/paste the URLs and send them to the advertiser/agency manually. Alternatively, tap Share - Email or Share - SMS to send the URLs by E-mail/SMS.

The following table explains the fields and buttons of the Share Live Preview URLs menu:

Field/Button Description
Start Preview URL this URL opens the app, whose IDs (site ID etc.) you specified and displays the creative from the insertion ID you specified; it has the same effect as tapping the button Start Live Preview (see above)
Stop Preview URL stops the live preview immediately; it has the same effect as tapping the button Stop Live Preview (see above)
Share - E-mail opens the e-mail app on the device to send the Start Preview URL and Stop Preview URL by e-mail (Note: only works if you have an e-mail account configured in the native mail application)
Share - SMS opens the SMS app on the device to send the Start Preview URL and Stop Preview URL by SMS

Previewing the creative (advertiser/agency)

As an advertiser/agency:

  • make sure the publisher's app is installed on your device (no need to install Smart AdServer's Dashboard/Preview app)
  • execute the Start Preview URL received from the publisher by e-mail/SMS
  • after the publisher's app is launched, navigate to the screen within the publisher app where the appropriate websiteId/pageId/formatId is implemented; these Ids must all be present and match with those specified by the publisher in the Dashboard/Preview app (as explained above: "Configuring the Live Preview")
    Example:
If the live preview URL is
sas1123://preview?v=1&pid=16474&fid=48468&iid=545465&d=3600&s=ecfc5595709177182e569a3a5346b3ed258268dde6e7a8ff86fac6717c2c5f90&e=1493455478 then you can preview the ad in the screen in the publisher app, where the placement is specified by the following IDs: siteId=1123 (see "sas1123") pid=16474 (pageId), fid=48468 (formatId)

The Preview label indicates that the ad you are seeing is a live preview ad:

You can expand the Preview label to get access to the options:

  • Refresh - loads the placement again to view another preview ad - only in case the publisher has configured more than one ad (creative) in the insertion
  • Stop - stop the live preview
